Hi all,

I’m thinking about a IHI VF23 on my scoob, together with some changes in the ECU, guess with Unichip.
The car is a UK-standard my99 with 60.000 miles on the “clock”; 35.000 miles with a (dutch) EMS-chip and open exhaust (in november PS-powerrun results: 259 bhp, 248 lb/ft). The car did many “haevy” miles on german Autobahn, and this year 5 times Nürburgring; till now no problems at all.

How many of you guys did this VF23 modification (I read Sam’s contibutions), and what’s the experience till now?

And most import, what about reliability? Do you think the engine (and clutch, gearbox, etc) can handle this extra turbo-power for some time? I hope to do some more 50-60.000 miles with this car/engine.....
Something more to say than "question of luck"???

My VF23 came as standard and lasted 2900 hard miles including nurburg and Catalunia.

No problems at all until a famous remap, then lasted 600 miles it had been run too hot and then turbo seals had fried (along with the valve stem seals....I genuinely believe it is an oil supply problem etc http://bbs.22b.com/ubb/mad.gif )

Another 22B mapped by the same ( I genuinely believe its an oil supply problem http://bbs.22b.com/ubb/mad.gif )

had his VF23 shatter and blades disapear through the engine, again the turbo was operating outside its limmits! http://bbs.22b.com/ubb/mad.gif

So VF23 are good turbos but not indestructable http://bbs.22b.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif

Hum... My VF23 died shortly after an engine rebuild after the same "tuner" melted two of my pistons... Oh well.

I meant my turbo lasted 29,000 miles http://bbs.22b.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif

Blimey, nothing is indestructable!

My VF23 is on a UK MY99 happily running 1.2bar with some overboost and Link ECU and a few other tweaks http://bbs.22b.com/ubb/wink.gif

Like i said on Scoobynet, the std clutch isnt up to much. Your ECU seems to be working well - "if it aint broke, dont try and fix it". Presumably the EMS can be remapped once you have the VF23 on?

Hope this helps even up the experiences from the 22B and STi Brigade whoose turbos were probably killed as a by-product of their engine failures anyhow!

Sunil my Turbo failed as it was "fried" after a remap let the engine run too hot http://bbs.22b.com/ubb/mad.gif

Sunil,

My turbo died as a direct result of a certain "tuner" melted my engine... said tuner claimed to have checked the turbo was okay when rebuilding the engine... bearings failed within a few thousand miles of the rebuild, so obviously the tuner did not check it thoroughly enough... suprise suprise... http://bbs.22b.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif
