A new gearbox ;)

Dan Lewis
28th May 2007, 07:41
A new gearbox ;) Oh no :( which gear this time?
I thought i heard it was just stuck in between gears.

Cord
28th May 2007, 11:45
Hmmmm, not sure I can rustle one of those up!

Steven
28th May 2007, 21:14
Initial thoughts were it was stuck in gear, which basically stemed from me going from 2nd gear into 5th (i think) and then having freewheeled back to the return road. I managed to select 1st and then get 2nd. I then couldnt get it out of 1st.

Stripping the transfer case off Paul and I couldnt remove it from 1st gear. Paul then noticed that a tooth was missing from 4th gear along with shrapnel from the 5th/reverse hub.

Paul then went, oh hang on, its a bit more serious than that, half of 4th gear appears to be sat on the bottom of box!

Deep joy, day duly ended!

Finished 4th in the end, with a new PB in my car of 11.06 at 124mph with a poor 1st/2nd gear change. Previous run was 11.09 at 127mph!

Still full weight, nothing removed.

Sorry to hear about yet another gearbox problem Steven. :(
It wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't an item which needs time, money and strength to fix!

I believe you're times were getting better as the day went on, so 10's were a definite if only the box had held together. smile.gif

What do you think you'll do about the gearbox woes you're having?

Steven
29th May 2007, 10:07
Dont know Alan to be honest. I honestly thought this was working right. In terms of uprated gears, this has lasted the longest, nearly 1000 miles, the others only managed 4 to 500 miles.

Dont know what to do in terms of ultimate fix, perhaps only options are sequential or auto!

I was starting to get in tune with the car once we sorted the launch control (helped egts climb so improoved spool).

11.09 was with a clutched change to 2nd, which went smooth and ended with a 127 terminal.

The 11.06 was the first clutchless change to 2nd, which i did wrong and bogged down in 2nd, resulting with the 124 terminal.

Both runs had 1.880 60 foot times running 215/35/18 Toyo T1-R's at 30psi.

The car definately has a 10 in it, and in fairness it should walk into the tens, even at the full weight its still running.

Your old car did good!

I never do a clutchless 1-2 its way to hard on the trans in my opinion.

Steven
29th May 2007, 15:13
As daft as it sounds Andy, it actually feels smoother doing clutchless 1-2 than use the clutch, which seems to give an almighty bang.

John Stevenson
29th May 2007, 15:20
I'd have to aggree with Steven, I feel the change smoother (as long as you are fast enough of course) without clutch.

It's such an expensive thing to keep breaking though, i don't know how you've stuck it for so long!

Not sure an auto box would really be your cup of tea cause you still like to do handling stuff is that right?

Cheers about my old car. smile.gif
I met and chatted to your mum and dad for quite a while on Sunday while you were beavering away trying to fix the box. I didn't say who i was or anything like, but they are a lovely couple. They are so, so proud of what you've managed to achieve so far. Told me about the late night shenanigans you've had testing the car! :D

---john--- Remind me how many gearboxes you pair have 'shafted' between you ;)

Steven
29th May 2007, 19:10
LOL, i heard you chatting to them, sorry didnt say hi.

I am going to ditch the casing and find another one, just in case its that.

Hmmm, broken the following:

April 16th 2006 - PAR Straight cut syncrho 2nd gear
May 29th 2006 - PPG Straight cut syncrho 2nd gear
July 2nd 2006 - Modena Straight cut dog 2nd gear
Car taken off road
Early December 2006 - PPG Dog box installed
March 10th 2007 - 5th gear hub smashed
April 7th 2007 - 5th gear hub smashed, together with engine!
May 27th 2007 - feck knows, but the box is destroyed!

The final straw is coming very close :(

Andy.F
29th May 2007, 19:18
To understand the loadings imposed during a clutchless 1-2 simply rev the engine to 3300 rpm
whilst at a standstill in neutral and without pressing the clutch, slam the gear stick into 1st
This is the instant change in rpm you are expecting of the drivetrain/engine when clutchless shifting from 1-2 at 8k

The rpm shift becomes lower as you go up the gears.

Slooby
29th May 2007, 19:26
Steven, how about going for one of the 4 speed drag box conversions in the 6 speed casing? much more room in one of them for bigger gears.

Dan Lewis
29th May 2007, 20:30
I think he just needs a sequential box conversion so all he can break is the paddles off the back of the steering wheel! tongue.gif :D

that is funny sure steven will see the funny side too of that but i would have given up long time ago this gearbox is costing him a fortune give it to the guy he has proper commitment.
was going to mention casing but didnt know if you had already done that after the first , second , third rebuild .

Paul@Zen
30th May 2007, 10:18
I've never had a problem with 1st or second gears though, 3rd always gets the pounding.

I think for some people (ie don't arm wrestling Steven's left arm), a totally different solution is called for. I don't know what it is yet.

PPG unfortunately don't do the kit I want, so I think looking further afield is required.

What about other brands of gearset ??

SQS and KAPS make some, as well as MRT ?

Ratios from the Czech gearsets may not be ideal for drag racing though, as they are more rally orientated.

Or simply a 6 speed lol.

Simon_
1st June 2008, 10:08
think MRT use PPG?

also I think Steven is trying to break, I mean using a 6speed in his wagon
