A friend of mine has asked me if its okay to prevent exhaust headers leaking from the sleeve joint by filling them with silicon sealant.

I know sealant seals by definition, but I wasnt sure what to suggest.

I wouldn't have thought silicone would survive exhaust temperatures.

Any sort of paste is a bad idea prior to the turbo as a little 'blob' may come dislodged and find itself hitting a 100,000 rpm turbine. Gulp !

I believe sleeved headers are designed to function without any sealer whatsoever.

You can get a silicone sealant which is good for upto 500 deg C but not sure I'd use it to glue a car! What about Hylomar Blue which is used for gasket sealing?

Adam, think I would go along with Andy on this one. Not a wise idea. Why not give Ian at Haywards a call!

Tim, header temps will get well in excess of 500 deg.

IMO, Silicon will be a waste of time. Temp issues aside, the whole idea of a "slip joint", is to "slip" ! and it does, by up to 1/2" when the headers get hot.

I doubt silicon would last 10min's.

I concur with Andy... The headers will reach operating temps af well over 500C, and it doesn't take much in the way of foreign objects in the exhaust stream to destroy a turbo.

Did they try using duct-tape (duck-tape) to sort it? That should do the job... you can fix anything with duct-tape, submarines, noisy hostages, anything! http://bbs.22b.com/ubb/smile.gif http://bbs.22b.com/ubb/wink.gif
