Time me for another update firstly i have to thank John Stevenson for the massive help with the wiring on the car and putting up with the car sitting at Stevenson HQ part blocking up his beer fridge for a few months and the constant phone calls on updates ,anyway its been a bit of a trial this car and with work been very busy I have been finding it hard to keep self motivation so with light at the end of the tunnel I decided to get booked on the 22b sprints the first one for me being oulton which would let me have plenty of time to finish the car,Andy to get the mapping done and then me to get a bit of seat time, also booked on the JGM memorial at Elvington…….plans if they work are great……or not if they fail…. the day before mapping day I was up at Stevenson HQ to finish laying in the engine loom and the syvecs and at approx 10 at night we fuelled up the car and did all preliminary checks switched on the pumps fuel started spraying out of the rails quick check found a damaged o ring seal on the injector where it meets the rail ,didnt have a spare so we butchered an oversized o ring with a stanley blade put it back together and tried again, success no leak 2 turns on the engine and it fired into life after 3 years Next day we met Andy at Hypertec for mapping after a few hours of getting things set up IE a bit of geometery work as we needed the car running straight on the rollers didnt want it trying to drive to one side as I had just put thing on with rough settings, once the car was up and running and up to temp Andy tried a few pulls big problem the AVCS solenoids were not working allowing the cams to advance wiring was checked and tested everything pointed to the solenoids being at fault probably due to the engine standing for so long so I aborted the rest of the day and we took the car back to Johns for part 2 once I had the new parts to sort the car out.I decided to go down that route as there was no guarantee that the old solonoids would work even after cleaning and as its a fair drive for me upto johns. I went home and got intouch with my mate Rob who works at palmers to get the parts ordered from Japan they arrived about 10 days later as the spec-c 2 ltr solenoids are different to the 2.5 solenoids at the back which would have ment changing a few bits of wiring and the way the lines on the fuel rails exit to get past the plugs. So back upto johns for a couple of hours to fit the new solenoids and a another sensor which was faulty on the car and some new injector o rings as Andy had another date for me a week later. On the day of mapping I hitched up my trailer and set off arrived at John for 9pm,outside johns was JGM's H6 and Steve Darley they had a remit to do a bit of wiring tidying up on the car ready for Simons memorial that is an understatement seems like they had had virtually no sleep for the last couple of days the car was under a gazebo it had pissed down /blown a gale and they had totally pulled all the wiring out and restarted with fresh, epic result as the car fired up first time on the button anyway we loaded the cars up and set off the hypertec where Andy was waiting it was decided that mine would go on first again the car was warmed up to tempreture the idea was to drop a few maps in at variouse boost targets on vpower then drop the fuel from the tank then map it on v power/20% meths anyway after a run upto 1.3 bar Andy tried taking it higher but the car wasnt having it we checked the wastegate/3port/etc it wasnt having it so aborted mapping again,by this time I was getting well pissed off nothing going right but Im a firm believer in not giving up once i have started something so brought the car home for a rethink,it had been mention at the time that the turbo might be at fault so with that in mind I pulled the turbo and had a quick check on the exhaust side blades no damage pulled the inlet no damaged blades so on the morning of Oulton where I was ment to be competing but was now going to be spectating i decided to get a second opinion as the turbos a twinscroll clinic 42/46 I popped down to see them they gave the turbo the thumbs up big thanks to Mikee as he offered me his SC46 to borrow or buy if mine failed to get the car running for the JGM memorial so back home again head scratching the only thing that crossed my mind then was the intercooler as its a lateral combination I pulled it off and had it pressure checked at my local engineering firm it failed 3 cracks in the core in the sides and centre under pressure the cracks were opening problem found but hard to repair, so contacted mark to see about getting a replacement I will not go into the conversation but lets say it wasnt going the way i hoped it would and it was going to cost so with that in mind I got intouch with a company called Arron radiators in london who would recore the lateral intercooler with a 5 day turn round job sorted and true to their word it arrived back in 5 days they had cut the end tanks off and rewelded the new core in fitted back to the rad spot on just need now to sort out another date with Andy and have a chat with John about another little bit of wiring and hopefully this will be it finished……where have I heard that before a few pics below.

Old intercooler with some of the damaged areas.

    Repaired intercooler from Arron radiators.

Exhaust side of the turbo showing no damage.

Inlet side looks fine and no end float to worry about.

and to top it all a lad local to me had a set of 5 yoko 3 x supersoft tyres off his car which had done very little miles on the tour of Mull which he let me have at a coulnt not pass on price hopefully I can get the car finished so i can get some use out of them Lol.

Very interesting post Gussy, makes my sprint reports look short

A fellow competitor had exactly the same problem with his brand new Lateral FMIC, installed by a very well known Subaru specialist 2 months ago so they should know what they're doing. Perhaps a batch issue, but having now seen the method of mounting that FMIC/rad combo I was surprised at how its done, its a lot of weight to hang off a radiator.

TBH Justin I dont think the mounting is the problem the brackets that the intercooler sits on are quite sturdy now,my problem was the rad combo was bought second hand and from what I have been told it was one of the early lateral set ups going by the sticker on the top and speaking to the manufacturer of the intercooler it looks to me like it was just general wear and tear that caused the faliure plus age its all sorted now, the brackets that the intercooler sit on have been strengthened and once the rad was bolted back onto the intercooler and the brackets refitted at the top the only thing thats going to move it now is a frontal shunt (hopefully not) as work is manic again I will try and get a date in july to get things finished.Did you get that reverse scoop fitted off Frayz yet justin as its another job on my to do list.

Time for another update after all the hassel I had before, I thought their must be light at the end of the tunnel,......ho how wrong could I be......as I had a couple of free days spare from the millstone round my neck called work..and not been able to arrange anytime to suit to get Andy to finish off my mapping I decided to pop down to race technology and get them to sync my digi dash with the syvecs once they got the parameters in the dash sorted on the laptop they tried to get the syvecs to talk to the dash via the cambus but to no avail after they pulled the dash apart and double checked it they found it to be working fine and that there was a fault with the syvecs after a bit of digging and help from others it was found that my ecu was 1 of a hand full that had the canbus bridge missing for some reason, this was found by the build number which is in the logs, a quick e-mail to syvecs and they send me a brand new one in exchange with the latest knock controll added at no extra cost (so a big thanks for that) so this afternoon I loaded the logs and fired her up which was good to hear and also the dash working ok, finally at last hopefully all I need to do now is arrange a date with Andy........hopefully the next update will be the final one!!!!!!!!....what a bloody journey lol.
