    Quaife Modified Saloons 2017

    The story after 3 rounds:

New regulations this year for Class A cars included a reduction in turbo intake from 58mm to 50mm, and a reduction in rear wing height from roof level to half rear screen height.
Neither of these bothered me as my RCM420 turbo only had an intake of about 53mm to start with, and I didn't even have rear wing last year.
It didn't seem to worry Dale Gent either who is still ballistically fast, but the Escort Cosworths seemed to suffer running big turbos with restrictors fitted.

Still running my standard spec-c engine and RCM420 turbo we started the season with 405bhp. The main change from last season was the addition of the S202 rear wing and a homemade front splitter and cannards.

Round 1 at Brands Indy was on the British Truck Racing programme, I wasn't very happy with qualifying time just in the 53's, but cheered up when I found it put me 3rd on the grid. Apparently everyone found the track a bit greasy.
Race 1 was a fairly lonely affair starting and finishing 3rd in the race and 3rd in Class A, the car seriuosly overheated and I had to nurse it home for the second half of the race, but was determined to keep my podium finish.
Race 2 lasted about 10 seconds....an intercooler pipe popped off out of paddock hill, my sudden deceleration earned me a love tap from the Rover Tomcat behind. I had to pull off and watch Dale Gent lap absolutely everyone from my vantage point on the banking at Druids.

Turned out the overheating was head gasket failure......shit, only 2 weeks to Round 2.
Bought a 77,000 mile second hand JDM STi complete engine and dropped it in the car....I'm now the proud owner of a short engine with shot bearings, a full spec c engine with all accessories and knackered head gasket, and a 77,000 miler of unknown provenance....proper professional race team!
The 'new' engine only dynoed at 386 bhp, so that 19 horses bolted!

Round 2 was a trip to Snetterton 300, I loved the circuit, and a depleted grid meant I managed two 2nd places in the races and in Class A.
Still not a great deal of wheel to wheel racing to show though.

Before Round 3 I decided to get rid of the FMIC, no need for it with only c400bhp, and it was compromising general cooling. I was also convinced it was affecting turbo response.
Turns out I was right, not only because it felt much sharper but datalogging shows improved acceleration out of the corners with an aftermarket TMIC and water spray re-fitted.

Round 3 at Brands Indy was great fun.

I totally screwed up qualifying by spinning at paddock hill bend, luckily I had just completed the mandatory 3 laps and my time put me 11th on the grid

    https://youtu.be/2vahSp4ci0E?t=50

Race1 I made places from 11th to 5th, and more importantly got a run 10 consecutive laps in the 53's. The car is now consistently a bit faster.

    https://youtu.be/EzVfj7Ouzzo?t=70

Race 2 wasn't quite as much fun, I got into 3rd on lap 1 and remained there until the finish

    https://youtu.be/bLSMIZXcldA?t=39

Good race and Class finishes again, and I think I am currently 2nd in Class and 6th overall. Can't wait for the next round

Shame about your engine woes, at least you have a spare out of the working parts left over!

Nice in car, seems everyone is very well behaved on the starts, is Dale Gent in your class? By the speed difference looks like he's in another series!

Best of luck for the season.

    Cheers Justin,

Yes Dale is in the same Class. Anything 4WD goes in Class A, the highest class, even if you only had 200bhp with 4WD it's still class A.

I reckon whoever produced the technical regulations was no lover of 4WD and totally overestimated the advantage it brings.

Having said that Dale's car is rather extraordinary, as you spotted. I would have been doing about 100mph out of Clearways when he went past like I was standing still!

    Brands Hatch Indy 29th May.

Qualifying and just one race today, a quiet Brands Hatch after the Masters Historic F1 over Saturday and Sunday we joined the Morgan Car Club for a day of club racing.

The car's not fully on song, pulling more air since fitting a large TMIC and maxing out the current MAF set up, so the map above 5500rpm is fuel-safe and it can be felt in the muted response compared to last time out.
Also the Hankook Slicks which have already done 3 events have given their best and don't have much compound depth left. I found this evidenced itself by the fact that they never really felt 'switched on'.
With decent slicks after a couple of laps you can physically feel the increase in grip, when they were new that feeling was really empowering but then you have to rein it in, being financially challenged I can't afford to destroy 800's worth of rubber in a weekend so had to make them last!
Now they are very thin on rubber they get a bit gripper as they warm up, but there's nothing that's going to trouble your neck muscles in the corner's! Just like driving on R888s without the squealy noise to show you're trying!

Only just managed to dip into the 53's in qualifying, which I thought was crap but still bagged me 4th on the grid.

Race start, held 4th into paddock hill bend but Bill Richard's annoying little bee of a mini got down the inside up the hill, we had a bit of a brake-locking drama into Druids and he ended up in front.... I then had 3 or 4 laps trying to find my way past the wily old wizard who seems to triple the car's width once he's in front. I had a bit of a power advantage at the end of the straights, but that meant barrelling into the corner with a block pass and going wide on the exit, and he nipped past again up the inside. Finally manged to play him at his own game and make it stick................awesome fun! ( I have the greatest respect for Bill, who has instructed me a few times at Lydden, and was instrumental in getting me into this stupid game....the bastard!)
Anyway, after that there wasn't much to see from the front view, I was in 3rd for the remainder of the race being caught by a 500bhp Focus who I manged to block out of the final corner to hang on to a podium by 0.14sec! Sadly the rear-view camera didn't work, so you can't see that.

3rd in the race, 2nd in Class A, which puts me second in class for the championship and 5th overall, I think, and a bloody long boring 8 week wait until our next race.

29th July, Brands Hatch Indy, and finally the long 2 month break is over.
Haven't done much with the car except fabricate a larger MAF housing as the old one was maxing out, and then obviously had the car mapped and the sensor re-scaled.
I wasn't happy with the throttle response, being one of our best weapons, and I faffed around with different lengths intakes.
Also forgot to fit new front pads, and slapped these on the night before the race......having had 2 months to do this simple task......twat!

Qualifying wasn't great, awesome throttle response, but on lift and reapplying the throttle something was definitely confusing the ECU. Also horrible brake judder made turning in a real effort!
Cut qualifying abit short with a 53.35 and 4th on the grid.

Before the 1st race the blowtorch and a 76 x 54mm reducer came out and we modified the intake to try and smooth the airflow.
I just kept my fingers crossed that the brakes would sort themselves out once the new pads had a chance to cool.

Race 1, and the car was awesome!!! My best ever lap of 52.58, but more importantly 9 laps in the 52's where previously I had dipped an odd sub 53 and a best of 52.9.
Data logger showed the improved grunt out of the corners was yielding a 2-3 mph increase at the end of the straights, great.

Tony Skelton took himself off at Paddock Hill gifting me 3rd, which I held onto, but most importantly actually kept the leaders in sight for once.

Race 2, and we all went out on slicks....and then it rained......I sneaked into second on lap 1, reckon the Auto DCCD my car is better than a 4WD WRC Cosworth in the wet!
A couple of incidents, safety cars and red flag cut the race short........2nd place.

Great fun and good results. 2nd in Class A, and 4th Overall in the championship

Race 1 hasn't got much to see after the Clio's off on the second lap

    Next event 19th August......you guessed it.....Brands Indy!

14 of the season's championship races are now done, and things have continued to go well.
Unfortunately I had to miss the Brands GP race as we were away, but last weekend's Indy races made up for it, qualified 4th with a 3rd, 2nd, and personal best lap of 52.35 in the races.

A couple of tweeks to the car:
My RCM custom 80mm MAF housing and K&N cone filter have replaced the HKS mushroom, and the car feels sharper, although no more ultimate power or max speeds.
Still circa 400bhp with max 125mph on the main straight
Tried to stiffen the suspension to get rid of the suspension bounce driving out of corners, but this resulted in understeer, so dialled back a few clicks after qualifying.
Finally we put loads of ice in the IC reservoir just before the races!

The overall result was a car that handled really well, and was consistent in all aspects through the race durations. Very confidence inspiring.

Race 1 was the best fun, I lost out at the start to an EVO with plainly evident greater grunt, but not great handling. Took a couple of laps and buttock clentcher around the outside of Paddock Hill Bend to get past, and I thought the leaders were out of reach. Amazed to find myself catching up, the RS Focus suffered gremlins and waved me by and I got on the exhaust of the Cosworth WRC in 2nd........
    https://youtu.be/LB-Q_0EA4d8?t=55

Race 2 and I had a bit of a racing incident at Druids on the first lap. Actually ended up finishing 2nd, but not the most fun as the race ended behind the safety car after a another crash.
    https://youtu.be/iZ4KvG5YwAE?t=23

    After all that with only 2 races left I've had 10 podiums ( 5 x 2nds and 5 x 3rds ) two 5th places, a DNF and a missed race, and I've now secured second in class A for the season......for the 3rd time......always the bridesmaid!

Last meeting is with the British Truck Racing final round on 5th November.......I hate that meeting, cold, damp, greasy, diesel-soaked track....recipe for disaster!

The final meeting was with the British Truck Racing Championship at Brands Hatch......Trucks, water cooled brakes, clouds of diesel, cold weather.....Recipe for disaster.
This time it was literally disaster for a few of our drivers. Three totally written off cars, 4 drivers injured, one still in hospital with internal bleeding........add a number of lesser shunts and damage......sadly the meeting ran true to form.ops:

I was one of the lucky ones, not only did I survive the day with only the lightest rub with a well driven Clio but I also got my first outright win in the Quaife Modified Saloons. I've had 2 previous race wins in SEMSEC Saloons, but that was in 2012 and 13. It's been a long wait.

Qualifying was late on Saturday on a cold, damp but drying track. I elected slicks, most others were on full wets!
Qualified 7th, so not too bad. The slicks worked to a point but I couldn't lean on them.

Race 1 was great fun for me, but this is also when the bad crashes happened..........a mini hit the tyres hard on the way up to Druids and literally flew back over the track straight into the path of an Astra at full chat..........ironically the drivers were father and son.

    https://youtu.be/DCKRVZuPCH4?t=347

Then at the end of Race 1 Rod Birley hit the wall hard, totalled his car, seat snapped as well.... he's badly battered but at home. You can see the car at the end of my video.

    http://www.kentonline.co.uk/kmtv/vid...ds-hatch-8737/

I had great fun having to overtake cars for the second time, having done the hard work outbraked myself, lost all sense of gears and had to do it all again!
    Finished 4th

    https://youtu.be/TpjCvRWjtnM

Race 2 was a little more conventional, sorry about the crap video. Looks like I'm 2nd on the grid, but I'm actually 4th. It's really hard to hold back on a rolling start in that situation, and you almost have to let the guy in 3rd take the first corner to prove you didn't jump him....that's my excuse anyway!
Having made the 2 overtakes I held on for what was a shortened race distance to take the win.........my head immediately expanded to 3 sizes larger than my helmet!

    https://youtu.be/u1etSIxMyJQ

Having collected my cup I jumped into the car and drove home! Not too many Modified Saloon race winners can do that....all power to the Impreza!!!

The end of a great season, 11 Race Podiums including 1 win, second in class A (for the 3rd time), and I guess about 5th in the Championship standings.

To be honest the results are insignificant compared to the adrenalin rush of wheel to wheel racing. If it ever stops making me nervous, excited and exhausted I'll stop doing it, regardless of the results!

And to think that the car wouldn't even start on the morning of your first qualifying session of the season

I remember that Nick, many thanks for your help again, it seems ages ago now.

Many thanks for the kind comments.

Only 5 months to wait until we can do it all again!

Looks good fun! Enjoyed watching those videos, always fancied having a go but the cost of repairs and the thought of smashing it up has always put me off, hats off to you for getting stuck in!

It is great fun, and very addictive.

I 'justify' it by thinking my car doesn't owe me anything....bought in 2006, used as a work car until 2010, racked up over 220,000 road miles....etc etc, but then if I count up what I've actually spent on it...it's so frightening I have to keep it a secret!

Worst thing you can do is add up the costs. You are only here once so enjoy it!

Well done on a great season.

Looks more than mildly terrifying Steven! You were flying past those Caterhams.

I looked up the results on TSL, I assume you shared qualifying and one race each. You both did really well, particularly impressed with your best lap in the race, quicker than the GT3, and only beaten by a Radical and a Stuart Taylor Loganberry, whatever that is!

Also looks a really great flowing circuit, one day when I get a trailer!

No it is our genuine imperial miles Nick... well almost.
Speedo was converted at 27,000Km, so about 16,000 miles. From then on it was miles, but had almost a year without a working speedo or odo, so the 220,000miles is probably a bit of an underestimate.
(What I haven't said is how many engines its had though!)
