Right, you have 50 weeks to get yourselves sorted for this one, in fact less if you take Scooby Shoot Out 4 into account too.

The team of ten should be constructed from the following IMO

3 Drag/top speed cars
3 Handling cars
4 Very good all rounders

IMO the drag cars need to be very low 10's or under (so TeamIce, Andy and Paul)

IMO the handling cars must be know by all as having an excellent setup, and have a good driver.

IMO the all rounders need to still be able to do sub 11 seconds quarters.

IMO all applicants for the team must come through here, and not direct to Chris Mann, causing confusion, and difficulties from both Chris' and the team reps point of view.

ANY cars not running at the 1st July 2006 should be excluded from the team if the Team rep deams it appropriate.

Cars should not be abused, they should be left alone, for the 2 weeks prior to the event, other than washed and prepared for the event.

No one, and i mean NO ONE, should fail to attempt 1 or more of the disciplines, with the exception of mechanical failure on the day.

The apportionment of time through the day, should be appropriate to allow you to run in ALL disciplines.

Just a few of my thoughts having now helped setup the team this year.

An 11 second car isn't going to score any points in drag or top speed, so wouldn't it be a handling car? IMHO the all rounders would have to be good in all events, not suck equally in all three. :D

Agree with Peter. No good having cars that are unlikely to win any points.

We should pick the team based on "points potential".

Mark. Most certainly not. The ultimate handling car will be power limited (nitrous aside) precluding it from fantastic 1/4 mile and to speed. To add to that you will be looking at a suspension setup that is not what I would run for a pure drag car.

With money, and a pit crew, the ultimate all round car could really highlight gaps in the rules, noticed by a few of the skyline lot already, and my original plan for this year time permitting.

Graham, its the 30th July, and if your up for it, put your name on the list by copying and pasting, and then we know what we are playing with.

My aim is to get a good mix of cars. We go drag racing god knows how many times a year, you and john go hill climbing god knows how many times, so some sort of focus would be good.

Thanks for following my link and coming to look.

Mikee, good thinking, i will contact Andy.

John, cheers for that. The difficulty arrises in replicating what we are likely to come across at TOTB. Its a very short twisty circuit usually, and takes anywhere between 30 odd and 40 odd seconds the last few years.

Steven Which is exactly what the short circuit John mentioned is, maximum speed will be similar to totb track as it's mainly 2nd/3rd gear stuff.
Just don't expect to get anywhere near John on that track !!!

Thanks for the potential offer Steven. smile.gif

Just a few thoughts on the handling side of things. This years circuit was nothing like a race or sprint circuit (or road IMHO), even curborough flows like a normal circuit compared to what was setup for TOTB.

To do well on the sort of layout used at TOTB this year you have to drive the car on instict, it is too tight to drive well in an unfamiliar car, especially when the runs are so limited, the layout used at TOTB1 and 2 was far easier to drive quickly straight out of the box than what we were given this year, as they flowed like a normal b road/tight sprint circuit.

The only way you'll get a great result on the handling if they use the same concept on layout will be with a driver who knows the car extremely well, which means some pre-event test runs on a comparable course. To achieve that it's going to need time at an open test venue with a laid out with cones course, a sprint track or normal circuit wont teach you anything usefull.

It would also help if the car is very low geared, like an early RA, it wouldnt benefit from much power over 400BHP IMHO either as the performance will be tyre grip and low speed acceleration biased rather than high speed acceleration biased.

It would be very helpful if Chris could confirm in advance what type of layout they plan to use in next years TOTB as that will determine what's best to go for on the handling, to win that based on this years layout style i think it's going to need a very specific car setup which wont perform in the other disiplines.

Slooby
22nd November 2005, 09:17
So a 6 speed box would actually have some uses afterall!?!

I agree, although I only had one sighting run I still found the circuit a bit confusing....like wtf is it going now ??... very point and squirt style which would be fine in a westfield type thing but not our big lardy saloons.
How about an oval or figure of 8 ?? Seriously, you could either go for times or just showboat by drifting, spectators may appreciate it more ? the current handling set up is not a spectator puller imo.
Plus I'd really like to see Keiths Skyline or Calders Supra drifting with 1200bhp  :D

johnfelstead
22nd November 2005, 23:50
With a rear torque bias Tim, you definately need that to get a good time on a tight/tightening circuit like this years layout, 50/50 split induces too much power on understeer to be agresive and precise.

johnfelstead
23rd November 2005, 00:00
The best handling course ever, was the layout used for TOTB2 test day, that was brilliant, It allowed you to drive the car, even an unfamiliar quick car, to it's potential, it even had a bit of a jump which you could take sideways which was quite spectacular inside the car anyway. :D

This years course i found frustrating as there was no time to look where you were going and at the same time take in the gauges, learn the power delivery and handling charicteristics etc.

Slooby
23rd November 2005, 00:16
If I can afford it John, before TOTB I'll change the box for a 6 speed with DCCD for that rear biase...hopefully one of the new 2.5 Sti boxes ;)

stevieturbo
23rd November 2005, 00:21
I would imagine the handling circuit was like that, in an attempt to give smaller less powerful cars a chance of gaining points over the bigger faster cars, if of course they even bothered to take part in it.

Steven,
Not sure what engine the car will have in it for TOTB, but primarily the car (Spec C) is being setup to specialise in handling. More will be gauged after SSO.

Please feel free to stuff me on the list.... albeit not as an all rounder (which in essence means I do not hold out any hope for inclusion). :D

Most of it is easy, with peoples results gaining them a place in the team, but I think checking the validity of

And to shorten his name down a little, I think "John Stevenson- Big Nob" would be easier ;)

Redline Ten of The Best 5 -Announcement - Press Release
(27th Feb 2006.)

It's our pleasure once again to invite you all to Redline Ten of the Best 5.
The event will take place at Elvington Airfield on Sunday 30th July 2006
from 10am onwards.
Competitor Entry forms will be available to download via our website from
1st March: www.totb.co.uk (http://www.totb.co.uk) Email enquiries via enquiries@trackdayplus.com
Spectator tickets are on sale in our online TOTB shop from the 1st March at
£15 per adult in advance, or will be available on the day at £20 on the
gate.
http://shop.totb.co.uk/products.asp

Response has already been fantastic from clubs wishing to compete this year
and we are pleased to confirm entries from the following clubs and groups:
GTR Register, The 200+ Club, Team Subaru, Mitsubishi Lancer Register,
Vipers, GTO UK, 200SXOC, GT4OC, Skyline Owners Club, Hondas UK, UK Supras,
GTIR-OC, RS Cosworth & RS Turbo, Performance Rover Group, FDUK, CCC UK, Fiat
Coupes, IMOC MR2, Performance Vauxhalls, Westfield's and others.
Also confirmed in the expected 120 car entry list are the following;
defending TOTB Champion Keith Cowie's RB Motorsport R32, the new Norris Evo,
Calder Racing Supra, Fensport Corolla and Celica, Martin Hadland's new
Cosworth Escort, Tim Webster's N1 Nur R34 GTR and the GT Culture/Duke R33
GTR, TOTB Arabia Champion Ron Kidell R32 GTR, Mick Begley's Jun Lemon, Joel
English 900+bhp Viper, Andy Forrest Performance Subaru, Roger Clarke
Motorsport Subaru and Team Ice Subaru. Further updates will also follow on
other cars in the lead up to the event.
We still have space available for suitable cars that are not part of an
existing club/group/team. Performance car Tuners can also apply to compete,
either as part of one of the existing Team entries or as individuals,
subject to approval and sufficient space.

Spectator ticket prices are kept at the same price yet again, and are
available in advance at just £15 from our website, or alternatively can be
purchased on the gate on the day from 9am onwards at £20 per adult. Ticket
purchases can be made after 1st March via
http://shop.totb.co.uk/products.asp
Our phoneline number is also on the website for credit card ordering. Clubs
and groups can also obtain further discount on entry tickets if purchased in
bulk, email us for details.

We are pleased to announce that The Organisation Ltd will once again be
arranging the Trade display areas on our behalf. Contact details for all
trade/advertising and sponsorship enquiries listed below.

Other planned improvements to the event include further raised grandstand
seating areas and the return of the Top speed spectator viewing area which
was very popular, accessed via a site bus. The top speed trap will also now
be set at a standing mile distance, to utilise a recognised distance for
this part of the competition.

The event format remains largely the same other than a slight tweak to the
points scoring system for the Overall Champion. The Overall Redline TOTB 5
Champion Award will still be based on total points scored from all 3 events
(1/4m, handling and Top speed) plus any bonus points gained from the
handling or drag shootout finals. We are however instigating a bonus point
for competing in all 3 events, plus additional bonus points for anyone who
scores overall in all 3 events, which is a fantastic achievement.

The drag and handling shootouts will now only attract a single point bonus
for the winner, as opposed to the original 3 points given previously.
The team trophy is also certain to be highly contested this year, being
awarded to the club with the best points total combined from each team
member.

Crash.net will be supplying a results service to both public and pitlane
areas where information can be updated on the event scores and leaderboard.

The Closing date for all competitor entries is 2nd July 2006. There will be
a further short period for any last minute team changes or for reserves to
take up any places that become available. Please note no refunds will be
made after 2nd July. No changes will be made to any team sheets after 14th
July 2006 when the entry lists become final.

Any Traders interested in a display area should contact
The Organisation Ltd on: john@the-organisation.org or
claire.williams@the-organisation.org

Sponsorship and Media Enquiries to Simon Hinshelwood: simonh@bulldoghome.com

All event/team or individual Competitor entry enquiries to
enquiries@trackdayplus.com
Entry forms on website to download from 1st March.

Further news and event updates will be sent out monthly to all participating
groups, and will be listed on the www.totb.co.uk (http://www.totb.co.uk) website.

suprisingly, my car is starting to handle quite nicely smile.gif
It doesnt have the full expensive coilovers that some have but with a full whiteline kit, big brake conversion, sti inverted struts and eibachs (cheers Andy! ;) ) its really starting to fly round the track, Ill be at SSO testing/proving.
If you are taking on cars that will be handling based (way out of time on the drag) then I will happily put mine forward.

And, its not blue and probably wont have gold wheels tongue.gif

It might be enough to disrupt those pesky mistibitchys domination of the handling though?

I'm very tempted too. Was speaking to Peanuts on Saturday and I don't want to miss this or SSO (went to SSO last year too :D )

If you need handling entries then I'd like to put myself up for it as a potential. My car is an STI 5 RA Ltd with lots of good mods - coilovers, poly bushes, uprated anti-roll bars, AP 4 pots, GEMS ECU, bigger turbo, FMIC, etc - tested last weekend at 366bhp/375lbft.

Plus I'll be doing a few hillclimbs and more trackdays too :D

Also me and Peanuts can travel up together - practice our launches on the M1 at 5am :D :D :D

Judging by the list from chris, I guess there are only 7 places available on the team, can you confirm steven?

David

Steven
28th March 2006, 10:09
Nope, there are 10 places available, the 3 Chris mentions, Andy, RCMS and TeamIce have applied to Chris direct i believe.

However, they will either be at TOTB as part of Team Subaru, or as individuals, I am not going to be persuaded into including someone who has gone direct to chris, or been contacted by chris.

Chris informs me of all subaru applicants he receives direct, as he would prefer them to be in the team element, if they arent up to spec then they wont be in the team, simple as that.

Chances are though, the 3 cars listed, will be of the higher end of the quality of applicants, so may well make the team.

I have seen recently on the new Zen website, that the Zen car will be running as part of Team Subaru at TOTB5! Again, the same can be said to that statement as those above.

The picking of the team this year will be extremely difficult, as i am intending to have a few handling specific cars included.

Whatever happens, the Team WILL be the best we have fielded to date.

Steven I have not applied direct, I have however mentioned to Chris that I would be hoping to run this year. I presume thats why my name is in the promo list ?

I realise there will be tough competition and don't assume that my car will automatically make the top 10.

Hence no bold claims on my website ;)

I realise there will be tough competition and don't assume that my car will automatically make the top 10.

Hence no bold claims on my website ;)

Andy </font>[/QUOTE]I was under the impression that top 10 overall finishers get automatic entry into the following year.

If that's so then it will only be entry to run at TOTB5 smile.gif
Not necessarily as part of "Team Subaru" ;)

I'll leave the politics to the politicians then, see you at TOTB*

My job is racecar engineer on Historic CanAm Sportscars and Saloons. That weekend i will be running a March 9 litre CanAm car and a McLaren 6 litre CanAm car in the Orwell Supersports Cup at the Silverstone Classic 3 day race meeting.

Do you get to drive them yourself at all?? Wonder how the 9 litre March would perform on the Ring :D :D :D

collaborative effort, it is managable via the web, and is hosted/setup via the people at www.planc.co.uk (http://www.planc.co.uk) who also did the overall graphic design.

Anyone seriously interested in a sizeable website should have PlanC on their list.

The March holds the outright lap record at the Südschleife (southern loop) of the nurburgring, it set the fastest lap of the GP circuit for the Supersports cars last year, but doesnt get used on the Nordschleife.

But surly Adam will change his mind by this weekend :D

Paul,
I don't see where the "politics" come from.
Surly Team Subaru is made up of the most suitable car/drivers available.
Yes you and your car are strong candidates in a very strong line up ;)

As you have a "free" you are able to run at TOTB5 whether in the team or not surely? So Liz's original statement was almost correct :D

Erm...I pulled out of the running, there's no way my car will be ready in time, I've got to spend the rest of this year concentrating on, and recovering from, moving house :(

Mind you the upside of that will (fingers crossed) be having a garage of my own at home for me to work on my car :D
