Following on from the discusions in general, please indicate if you would like to attend a RR day at Prosport and roughly when you would like to do this.

If there is enough demand i'll speak with Pete about running the event.

Cheers
john

I'd be interested John, only 15 minutes away from me too http://bbs.22b.com/ubb/biggrin.gif .

May would be a nice time for me though... don't know if that's too far away tho?

Tony.

Well, my car had decided it prefers living @ Prosport, so I probably won't even need to drive it down for a RR day http://bbs.22b.com/ubb/wink.gif

Might be up for it, would prefer a month or so in order to sort all the issues out and get around to mapping the damn thing.

Powerstation charges me / groups 25 pr run.
What is the likley cost at Prosport?
(got to think about the fuel costs too http://bbs.22b.com/ubb/wink.gif )

I am sure we can do something similar with Pete at Prosport. We talked about this late last year and the costs would be in that sort of area for a group RR day.

Hopefully a few more people reply and we can take this further.

Can they plot front/rear torque splits? Might clear-up some of the speculation.

johnfelstead
21st January 2004, 23:15
i dont think they can.

Floyd

Er yes, I'm kinda interested. Or is this for big power boys only who want a reasoned discussion?

where are prosport based john?

Tone Loc

Stockport, Heaton Mersery. Fairly easy to find off the M60, A34.

Tony.

David_Wallis
22nd January 2004, 16:24
Not really interested but could I get a list of settings used, or could they be printed so if I went on my own one day then I could run with the same settings, say similar to shootout mode?

David

johnfelstead
22nd January 2004, 16:36
There is no such thing as shootout mode David. This RR gives you a printout of power/torque as measured using the same methods every time.

No limits on power levels, if we did it that way we would never get the day up and running.

Fuzz
22nd January 2004, 19:21
What "type" of rollers are they.. eg MAHA ?
as per PS ?
Just wondered what other features you might be able to get plotted onto the graph along with the bhp and torque at the same time.
for example boost curve ?
Do these rollers require a DIN ISO standard "adjustment" or is it just a case of "what you get is what you get"
??

I'll pop in to see pete tomorrow and see if we can do something in February. I'll let you know then start organising it formally.

24th January 2004, 17:58
Hi Guys,

I have just got back from having a chat with Peter at Prosport and he is all for having a Rolling Road day for us.

To acomodate most people we are going to do this on a Sunday. I would like to get this aranged for February. It's looking like the 15th Feb may be posible, i will lias with Peter on monday to confirm this. In the mean time can you let me know your interest and what dates you could make it.

We are going to keep this to a small group, 15 cars ideally, so we have plenty of time to do the runs plus keep it a friendly small crowd. Price is looking like 30 per person, you will have the use of equipment like select monitors to hand if you wish to take advantage of this.

Pete has a great setup at Prosport so if you would like to give the car a run and at the same time check out his facilities put your name down asap so i can get this organised.

Please keep the format to the following with your prefered date listed (22nd may be dificult as 21st peter is running a rally car in the North West Stages, i need to confirm):

John Felstead: STi5 TypeRA: 15th Prefered 22nd OK 29th OK

Thanks
John

Hi John,

Stu Churchill: 2001 WRX: 15th Prefered 22nd OK 29th Uncertain A.T.M.

As I said, I'm running at Well Lane on the 8th so a comparison on a car that isn't fettled before each RR day would be interesting.

Please put my name down for RR - ideally for any weekend but later in Feb.
UK98 with a few mods - struggling to run properly, but should be sorted soon !

This date actually clashes with a L.A.D.S run out around Lancashire, but I would rather get on the rolling road http://bbs.22b.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
Let me know if you have any spare spaces, after me, and I will let the SMACS know.

so who is betting on who?

smart money has to be on harvey for the peak figure by previous performance. I do not think there will be much between mikee and jb. trout and christian is anyone's guess. christian has had the time to set the car up so cant be ruled out and trouts has been build for this sort of thing.

Is everyone running the fuel type and spec they use on the road?

I am intending to use 21 PSI midrange, 19 PSI at 6000 RPM and hoping for 420 BHP and 400 lbft.

I will be using a 10% methanol blend with 90% Optimax in the tank as I do on the road (net cost 2/tank).

What is everyone else using?

Anyone using race fuel as obviously the results will need some interpretation if they do?

I'm hoping to see a few turbos (bolt on or custom GT30R setups - ie Harvey and Trout) that might be useful upgrades for my engine, but they will not be representative if race fuel is used.

good question john as there could be quite a difference between road spec and a special,on the edge map. I remember you getting flamed because of using a bottle of NF, but you where up front from the start and others could have added the same if they wished , to keep the variables similar.

after that iirc we decided a sensible dose of NF was worth about 5% gain with a well fuelled dose(full bottle/tank) worth 10%. (both mapped to suit)

not that it matters as it is up to each individual how far they wish to push the envelope. it does not matter about fuel type etc IMO, if people tell us what is getting used , this should help with understanding the results.

mikee, what turbo and boost are you running?

it will also be interesting, to see what people quote the bhp/lb, as what they "feel" their car should do on the day, with it being such a new venue without all the low/high reading rumours.

mikeesingh
11th February 2004, 18:09
t-uk,

turbo not got a model no., but its vf turbo with a garret cover and is rated upto 400hp, it is smaller than a td05/06 20g (if that helps)

im running 1.6 bar upto 6000rpm, then tails off to 1.4 bar. my car made 345.2bhp @6600rpm & 346.9torque @4000rpm at john nobles, but it only peaked at 1.4 bar on rollers and then tailed off after 6000rpm, (this is still with damaged pace FMIC, which im hoping to have sorted for the prosport day)

nobles read a bit lower compared to other rollers
to give you a idea ive posted the results from 2 x STI 8 below that ran at nobles and then at well lane 2 weeks later.

STi8 Type UK (PPP)
285 bhp 254 torque (nobles)
318 bhp 288 torque (well lane)

STi8 (PPP, centre decat, Afterburner backbox)
270bhp 250torque (nobles)
310bhp 292torque (well lane)

i dont want to stir up well lane again, but they cant be both right, theres over 40 torque and bhp difference on the 2nd sti 8. i think prosprort will be closer result to nobles, but i might be wrong.

Interesting reading the comments that people should be up front with what fuel they use.

What is noticeable though is that fuel tends to get sidelined when people start to compare *power* figures and concentrate on the hardware and boost used on the engine when discussing the figures it achieves on any particular rolling road day.

Problem with fuel though when it comes down to discussion on peoples results is who can determine, apart from the owner, what is in the tank? One bottle of NF per tank? or two? ;) , methanol?, race fuel? mixture of all 3?

All comes down to whether you trust the owner of the car who's results are getting discussed as to whether you believe him or not when he says what *brew* he's burning IMO.

Boost pressure is another variable that often gets er suppressed/enhanced ;) Does this rolling road have the facility to overlay the boost profile John ?
The MAHA rollers do this and it makes for interesting reading. Ambitious claims of 2 bar at 3500 rpm etc are openly exposed and high outputs from low boosts become much scarcer :D

Andy I quite agree! As an example, you claimed for a long time to generate considerable boost on the TD05 as low as 2800, yet your Star RR graph showed the same boost not coming in until near 4000rpm. Only later do we find out that you held it on the brakes to 'simulate a uk 5th gear' spool up.

Three runs produced very similar figures, a far quicker inertia based run was done which was also similar but did not capture the midrange torque as the load was too low and the boost did not reach target. This mode is really only used if the car cannot accelerate the rollers low down which would give a strange shaped curve until it had enough torque to do so. Does anyone know if the present Bosch rollers (Prosport?) use this method or not?took this from john's dastek thread in general. there was a marked difference between the different types of runs. the peak figures stayed roughly the same but the curves looked nothing like how they feel, on the road with inertia based run.

do not know how prosport do a run but one of the things I did like at dastek, was that the car was held at medium revs for a while in the test gear, to drop intake manifold temp but also increase EGT's rather than going straight into a run.

Do you have a confession to make Alan Not at all Andy. I used a full tank of fresh Optimax from a petrol station just north of the Forth Road Bridge. It was touch and go at the time whether i would have had to put in ordinary unleaded. 59 litres went in the tank! :D

I wouldn't get away with all the special brews out there for my figures cause rolling road results get dissected into m.i.n.i.s.c.u.l.e bits and pieces when they're published on these boards. ;) So much so the paper their printed on gets shredded! ;)

John

I've made a decision I thought I never would, forget what the rolling road figures say and go off if I like how the car drives.Never thought i'd hear the day.....does this apply to others results? ;)

I actually agree with what your saying here John with the bit about enjoying the car etc and forget everything else, but have a think...
Is it worth spending the extra cash to get a few BHP more to meet your target?
You have already said it's quick enough and it's been over a week without feeling you need more power. Why spend more and more money so you can turn round and say... i've got 450BHP?? Nothing shameful on 400BHP IMO, 2.5L or no 2.5L

Do you think it's going to be worth it? In percentage terms of horsepower? On a car with 100BHP, a further 50 is a big jump, but on a car with 400....just a thought.

Alan

john banks

Andy,

you must be getting through a lot of wooden spoons at present!

The boost profile low down really depends on the RR operator and how they use the load of the rollers. With little load there will be little boost low down.

And for the record - it was 2 bar at 3,100rpm - with a decent load profile on the bench dyno. But the boost targets have been changed to slug it a little as 502 lbs of torque a that point seemed to stress the block a little...

...also changing the cam timing meant I didn't need anywhere near 2bar to get better results :D

Possum :D

But if you're going to measure on how the car drives in the real world (what a weird idea... :D ), then just remove the power plots from the graphs and focus on the torque ones...and not just the values, but the shape...tells you all you need to know, no? smile.gif

Richard (who's not been near a rolling road for a very long time, and would need to remap timing for most Swiss ones before doing so anyhow...)

Paul@Zen
13th February 2004, 09:38
Richard,

The power plot is a function of the torque plot. The point is the rollers often don't give you a representative load profile WRT engine speed.

What is the cooling like at Prosport? Do cars reach the boost targets they reach on the road?

Fuzz,

Drivetrain losses would not require any extra setting up, it should just be an option to include on the printed graphs. smile.gif

MAP would be nice but, having had an engine let go just after a RR session because the hose hadn't been secured correctly, I would understand if prosport were not happy to risk fitting and removing a line for this to each car.

Drivetrain losses as recorded by the rollers is not the same as the actual losses encountered when the engine is powering the drivetrain in the normal way, that is one of the reasons why flywheel figures are hit and miss. PAW is the important bit. MAP & AFR plot would be a great plus, as would dB's ;) - I might win that one.

Julian,

At the risk of incurring the wrath of the "driving god" ;) :D

Until John says otherwise, expect that you'd need to be in Stockport by about 9am, and that cars will be running until 2 or 3 in the afternoon. That way, you know that most of your day will be set aside and can plan ahead accordingly. Bringing a drink and some food would probably be a good idea ;)

Each car's run would probably take around 20 to 25 minutes, once you've added in the time for strapping and unstrapping the car, etc.

Before the day, check all of your fluids, tyre pressures, loose hoses or any signs under the bonnet of something that is not right. If you have any doubts about anything, talk to people before your car goes on the rollers, as there will be no shortage of guys who know their way around these cars to help you.

And if all else fails, refresh your browser at midnight on Saturday smile.gif

Andrew, if you want to see something really funny, give Stu a can of redbull when he gets there, and the effect finally kicks in about 2 in the afternoon! That'll keep him going.

if floyd is okay with rich wild running , I would prefer to see rich's car run.

well lane gets enough stick about high reading , so it would be very interesting to see how the well lane cars do. P20, harvey ,rich and any others who have not changed the spec too much between runs, although I think steven may have changed his headers and bought a new turbo iirc?.

johnfelstead
18th February 2004, 14:55
as i said in the other thread, Rich will just move up one place if you drop out Floyd. It's unfair on the other people in the queue before him otherwise. If anyone else wants to sacrifice their place then Rich can be guaranteed a run, but until then the entries are as per listed.

We can try to do that Jim, hopefully that can be timed to work.

Although I'm not dropping out yet, I may need to remove myself from the definite list : the garage still haven't come back to me about the required lambda sensor, and I've got an intermittent mis-fire for them to track down as well. I won't even consider running under these conditions and without time to plumb in a new fuel pump/regulator, and a chance to even try mapping the ECU, I may need to drop out over the next few days. I'll post up as soon as I know.

Just to confirm. The meeting time for most people will be 9am with the aim to be starting the first run at 9:30am.

Sunday near Prosport is a very busy Market day, so when you arive park in the front carpark at Prosport, the rear will be coned off for a second parking area and entry to the rollers.

If you are not running on the rollers, please park outside the main carpark areas so the runners have a place.

Also we would like to keep spectators to a minimum, so dont bring 20 of your mates allong. ;) When the runs are taking place please stand well clear of the rollers, preferably away from the screen on the other side of the bed and off the main Rolling Road structure.

I am sure everyone attending will treat the premisses with respect but if you have any friends coming along please dont let them wander off around the workshop but keep them in the main area.

Any queries at all please ask before the weekend. Looking forward to a very interesting (and hopefully not too loud) day. :D

have we found out yet if prosport can plot the losses and the power at wheels , on the graphs?

I find the PAW peak v redline/limiter , a good indication to how "flexible" the car will be on the road.

Stu.C
26th February 2004, 13:16
Not sure if they can plot those figures, but a sample printout showing the summary of them can be found here (http://bbs.22b.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=8;t=000665).

johnfelstead

The dyno shows you power at the wheels, transmition loss and corrected power at the flywheel plots.

http://www.prosport.ltd.uk/photos/images/DCP06521.jpg

You can also show power/torque graphs seperately.

http://www.prosport.ltd.uk/photos/images/DCP06522.jpg

You can also compare two power runs, so for example harvey and davids plots can be viewed together and analysed at any rpm point

John/Andy .. as I have an obvious interest in Andy's car and how it does I would beg a favour, if I haven't arrived when Andy is due to go on can he "slip" down the list till I do ? Wouldn't normally be a problem and I plan to be there b4 09:30 however family are coming along ... and you know how hard some people are to get going on an early start !!

Will anyone other than Bob be bringing a copy of DeltaDash to plug in, just incase Bob's running late ?

The lure of creating lots of fancy graphs that I won't understand anyway has been keeping me going for weeks ;)

bring a copy of the latest release you downloaded from the website, the original CD's are probably quite out of date now. If you cant do this send me the file and i'll burn it to CD.

You know what you were saying about starting on the slippery slope of panic from having more gauges to watch ... I got a red flash from the KnockLink in 3rd gear, WOT, around 4,000rpm on the way home last night

I'm going out shortly to (gently) burn off the remaining 60 miles or so of fuel and put a fresh load of Optimax in, incase it's coincidence that I've got dodgy fuel for my first KnockLink trial :(

No activity at that point, other than the bottom green going brighter occasionally. At the end of that circuit, I came back via the trading estate and let rip between the roundabouts - at which point I got the red flash :(

Got your wooden spoons out again...

...and here was me thinking you knew something about cars Andy...

...because typically you don't map in wastegate control until all the pipework is on in the car.

Not worried about fuel and ignition - would simply prefer to keep everthing intact by not overboosting to three bar ;)

wont be running my car tomorow, as it had a acident yesterday. :(
was up at clinic having new intercooler/rad fitted (as pace one was damaged) and few other thing sorted, which was all finished last night.
asked a mate to take it out, to see what he thought of it. he lost control of it when back end came out while changing up a gear. car slid across the grass and hit a electricity box on front corner (knocked the electricity out at houses near by) didnt think it was that bad till i saw it today.
needs bonnet, bumper, wing, inner wing repair, headlamp panel and lights etc but new intercooler and engine are ok. the clinic is working through weekend to get it sorted and should be ready early next week. will get some pic up tomorow of damage and new intercooler.
will still try and arrange to get car on rollers at prosport in the next weeks
still going to come up tomorow as i got the day of work and got some wheels to collect.

Thanks to Stu for stepping in for me once i discovered i was going to have to go to my friends stag night last night. Great timing. :D

I'll post up as many plots as i can later tonight, some of the high power cars had major problems with wheelslip which was a real shame, but it looks like with the help of Harvey this is going to be worked on and hopefully can be resolved.

Thanks to Pete and Giles at Prosport for putting on a very enjoyable day (from what i saw of it. :D redface.gif ) and also thanks to everyone who travelled up to participate, it was great to see everyone there. I missed Harveys run unfortunately but hopefully i'll get accross to see that when doing some work on the rollers setup. David's car sounded awesome, it was great to see it running after all the hard work.
